USAAF M3 Anti-Flak Helmet
€425,00
Original WWII U.S. Army Air Forces M3 Anti-Flak Helmet. The M3 was essentially a modified version of the M1 steel helmet, adapted specifically for aircrew use. Unlike the standard M1, it was produced without a separate liner, with an adjustable webbing suspension system fitted directly to the interior of the steel shell. The sides of the helmet were cut away to provide clearance for flying helmet earphones, while hinged steel ear flaps offered additional protection to these vulnerable areas. The helmet retains its dark olive drab painted and flocked finish. This coating, similar in texture to cotton lint, helped prevent the wearer’s skin from freezing to the metal in the extremely low temperatures encountered at high altitude. It is complete with an adjustable webbing chin strap and press-stud fastening. Overall condition is good, with traces of wear, the right side hing is slightly bent. The helmet presents well and retains considerable character. The M-3 was worn over standard-issue USAAF flying helmets and saw its principal operational use from late 1943 through early 1945.
An attractive and desirable example of an original WWII USAAF aircrew anti-flak helmet.
