9th Canadian Field Squadron RCE – Wooden plate
Original WWII wooden remembrance plate of the 9th Canadian Field Squadron, Royal Canadian Engineers (RCE), 4th Canadian Armoured Division, dated July 22, 1944 – May 9, 1945. This wooden plate was handcrafted by a Canadian sapper of the Royal Canadian Engineers and depicts the unit’s route through France, Belgium, the Netherlands and into Germany. At the top is the red-blue striped RCE band, similar to the insignia used on RCE helmet decals. Various places along the unit’s route are written on the plate. It is further decorated with a mine detector and a part of a Bailey bridge that features the vehicle sign of the 9th Canadian Field Squadron, and the green formation sign with maple leaf of the 4th Canadian Armoured Division. The reverse bears a personal handwritten inscription, although much of the text is difficult to read. Size: approximately 30 × 38 cm.
Other wartime unit remembrance plates of this type are known to exist, but original examples are difficult to find.
