USAAF AN6513 “Red group” Parachute Harness – Dated 1943

Original WW2 USAAF AN6513 “Red group” Parachute Harness. As used by USAAF aircrew, gunners, radio operators, bombardiers, etc in bomber aircraft. These harnesses were used with detachable packs. These packs had snap hooks on the back, which would engage with the metal D rings to the front of the harness. The pack being stored separately and attached when needed by the wearer before bailing out. This harness assembly is in very nice condition, it is lightly soiled from use but is a nice example and a rare survivor. The harness material itself is in very good condition, without damage or fraying we can see. There is some soiling to one of the lower leg straps but otherwise in very nice used condition. The harness is stamped with details across one of the back straps, manufactured by “Simmons Company”, dated “August 1943”, stamped with part number. The harness is painted red on the shoulder sections. For some reason, the USAAF used 2 different types of harnesses, Red (1) and Yellow (2) group harnesses. These had different attachment methods for their respective parachute packs. The red group with the snap hooks on the pack and the D ring attachment on the harness. This was the opposite way around for the yellow group harnesses. As you can imagine this could cause an issue if you picked up the wrong pack when bailing from an aircraft! As such all harnesses and packs were then marked with red or yellow markings, easily identifying the corresponding pack that would attach to your harness. All metal hardware is of the plated variety and In good condition. The harness is fitted with a nice original 1943 dated back pad. All press studs are present. The harness is named, but hard to read the name.

A very nice parachute harness, ideal for a USAAF museum, collection or display. Very rare to find now.
