Original WWII Highland Light Infantry printed shoulder title. This English-made insignia, worn by Canadian troops overseas, remains in good condition.

In 1944-1945, the Highland Light Infantry of Canada (HLI), part of the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division, played a pivotal role in the final phase of World War II.

D-Day and Normandy
The Highland Light Infantry landed on Juno Beach on D-Day, June 6, 1944, facing fierce resistance in their assault on Bernières-sur-Mer. Despite heavy casualties, they secured the beachhead and pushed inland, participating in key battles like the capture of Caen and the intense fighting around the Falaise Gap, contributing to the encirclement and defeat of German forces in Normandy.

Northwest Europe Campaign
Following Normandy, the regiment advanced through France, Belgium, and the Netherlands, playing a crucial role in battles such as the Battle of the Scheldt in late 1944, which was essential for clearing access to the port of Antwerp, a key logistical hub for the Allies.

Final Push into Germany
In early 1945, the HLI fought in the liberation of Dutch towns and advanced into Germany during the final Allied offensives. Their actions were critical in securing key positions and maintaining pressure on retreating German forces.

By the war’s end in May 1945, the Highland Light Infantry of Canada had earned a reputation for its determination and courage, contributing significantly to the success of the Canadian forces in Northwest Europe.
