RAF D-type flying helmet, first pattern without external rubber earcup flanges. Reference number 22c/582 AM marked. Size No.2 which is 6 7/8 to 7. Cotton canvas helmet intended for use in tropical/desert climates in the Middle East, Mediterranean, North Africa etc and incorporating a neck flap at the rear to provide sun protection. The material is in very good overall condition. Good straps, all the press studs are still having their original coatings. The rubber receiver carriers are in very good fully flexible condition. The helmet’s satin lining is very good with only moderate even soiling, the inner donuts and in good condition. Felt panel (forehead area) remain in place and good clean condition. The leather chinstrap is good, retaining half of the metal end tip. The Bennett buckle is complete and good condition. A very nice example of this rare early variant D type flying helmet.
